A phlebectomy is a minimally invasive procedure that uses a small scalpel or needle to remove varicose veins on the surface of the leg. It’s highly successful when performed in patients who are good candidates.

This procedure is usually done within your physician’s office using a local anesthetic so that you remain awake for the procedure. A local anesthetic is far safer than general and therefor preferred by most physicians.
This procedure requires little to no special preparation on the part of the patient. Just leave your jewelry at home and wear loose, comfortable clothing which will allow the doctor to access the part of the body to be worked on easily.

To begin your doctor will clean and then anesthetize the area with a local anesthetic. thoroughly. A series of very small incision is made at the site to be operated on. Each incision is no bigger than a pencil eraser.  A phlebectomy hook which has a straight shaft and a blunt tip and looks very similar to a mini crochet hook is then used to remove the veins. Veins are very collapsible and even larger veins can be removed through the tiny incisions. This procedure can usually be completed within an hour.

Thanks to the anesthetic it is rare for a patient to report pain during the procedure. No stitches are required and the incisions heal up readily.

Once complete, the leg will be wrapped in a comfortable compression wrap. Graduated compression stockings will need to be worn for 2-3 weeks afterwards.

You should rest with your legs elevated following the procedure and just be easy on yourself for the rest of the day. You should be able to resume daily activities within 24 hours. Most doctors will ask that you limit strenuous activities for two weeks.

A follow up will be scheduled to make sure everything is healing properly. Nearly 100% of patients who undergo phlebectomy procedures experience success and the outcome they were looking to achieve.
