    Varicose veins and shoes

If you have varicose veins, you have probably wondered if the type of shoes that you wear affects your vein condition. Maybe you have questioned if the shoes that you own have caused the problem. Or, if you should switch to a different type of shoe now that you have varicose veins.

We can ease your mind and let you know that the shoes that you have worn did not cause your veins to break down. Most varicose veins are caused by lifestyle choices such as smoking, sitting or standing for prolonged periods of time, and obesity. Heredity can also play a factor. So, don’t blame your Manolo Blahniks for the ropy, purple veins on your legs.

Ladies, we know that your closet is full of them – high heels! As discussed, they did not cause your varicose veins. But, wearing them while afflicted with venous deficiencies doesn’t help.

    • First, they hurt your feet.
    • Second, and most important, is that high heels place your foot in a position where you don’t use your calf muscles as much as if you wore flats. The calf muscles play a crucial role in pumping blood back to your heart. The calves are your vein’s helpers. By keeping them in a constant position where they are contracted, they can’t pump blood efficiently.
    • Third, high heels are meant to show off the calves. If you have varicose veins on your calves, then emphasizing them with high heels is probably something that you don’t want to do.

Flat shoes are recommended for those with varicose veins or any vein insufficiency in the legs. The position of the foot allows for the calf muscles to expand and contract. Choose shoes from well-known brands, which tend to have sufficient ankle and arch support. Be sure to try them on and walk around before purchasing. The right fit and support can go a long way in making your more comfortable.

Compression stockings are one way to support your veins and give you some relief from the swelling and pain of varicose veins. Your doctor can recommend the correct type of compression socks for your legs. These, paired with flat shoes, can help to increase your comfort.

There really aren’t any shoes that will help you rid yourself of the varicose veins that you currently have. Only sclerotherapy or other surgical means will obliterate them altogether. Working with your doctor is recommended if you want to remove your existing varicose veins.
